BUHAY CARINDERIA REDEFINED

Were you one of those who reacted when the news broke that Madrid Fusion Manila is not pushing through? I clearly remembered massive reactions full of disappointments especially those who have been part of the famous gastronomy congress for the past three years. Few days after, Cesar Montano, head of the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) together with Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo who lead the media ceremony last Wednesday, April 11 revealed “Buhay Carinderia … Redefined”.

Carinderia offers a glimpse into Filipino’s culture and customs – they are the closest to what one gets at Filipino homes, where great recipes are handed down through generations.

"Buhay Carinderia ... Redefined" is a project of Montano which would campaign, highlight, promote the best out of what Filipino food can offer.

Carinderia and the affordable home-cooked Filipino specialties they serve have become an integral part of this country’s culinary and social identity. While eating in this humble food stand by the roadside may be considered a plebeian pleasure for some, those who knew better appreciate the fact that there’s more to this enterprise that has uplifted the lives of some 3 million individuals and their families.

I expect “Buhay Carinderia … Redefined” event to allow the people behind the carinderia, wherever they may be located, to have a chance to showcase their talents to a wider audience. We will become witness to the discovery of these noteworthy creations that celebrate the vibrant vibe of their town or city ” TPB Chief Operating Officer Cesar Montano said during the media launch of Buhay Carinderia on April 11 at Rizal Park Hotel Manila.

A wider and grander “Buhay Carinderia … Redefined”
“Buhay Carinderia … Redefined” is the brainchild of Erlinda Legaspi of Marylindbert International. Supported for the first time by the Tourism Promotions Board of the Department of Tourism, will be more expansive in scope.

There will be five legs prior to the grand culmination of the event at the end of this year.

The first stop will be at Vigan in June. Erlinda Legaspi's team will showcase from 15 provinces comprising Region 1, Region 2 and the Cordillera Administrative Region the best dishes, cooks, and the carinderia from which they came from. Carinderia owners and home cooks will then all gather at the Vigan Convention Center on June 28 and 29.

2nd stop will be exploring Central Luzon to showcase the best of the best particularly Pampanga being regarded as one of the culinary capitals of the Philippines. Same framework will be followed from the initial leg, but this time they will be gathered at the Laus Events Center in July.

The third leg will be in August at the Bicol Region, particularly at Naga. The next one will be in concentrated from the Visayas which will all gather in Cebu by September. In October, it will be at Mindanao and the 2 day culminating activity will be in Davao City.

A grand event will be held in November no particular venue was mentioned yet but this will definitely be the biggest culinary exposition that  will showcase the best of the bests from the regions.

Carinderia for the younger generation too
Erlinda Legaspi's team definitely want to reach everyone with this project by including the millenials through Erwan Heussaff. Erwan being able to establish himself since 2011, an advocate of healthy affordable eating with an exceptional online following, tapping him to be the content creator of all the events is one brilliant idea.

Legaspi explains that there’s a real pride in each of town or city visited. “Not only of the community’s rich agricultural heritage, but of the many recipes linked to it. And based on what we have seen so far, with the help of the Tourism Promotions Board and city’s or town’s ongoing appetite for celebrating its culinary roots, the future is bound to be just as delicious”.
